Bonus Room Update and Move In Day

Hey!

Last week was a blur filled with packing up our daughter’s apartment and finishing the flooring in the bonus room upstairs.  My husband was literally installing the last of the baseboards in the room as Catie, Devin, and I arrived with all of their things from the apartment this past weekend.

This remodel began because their initial plans fell through and they needed a place to stay for a short period of time.  Although unexpected, we’re glad that we had a space for them.

A reminder of the room when we bought the house in 1997.

And a reminder of where we started with this renovation — turquoise walls and pink floors and no real closet.  If you’d like more details on this remodel, click here.

And how the room looked moments prior to their arrival with all of their stuff.

This picture of the closet doors shows a truer color of the flooring.  We went with a bamboo flooring that we found at Lumber Liquidators.  I like the sustainable quality to using bamboo and I think the flooring is pretty.  Plus, bamboo is much cheaper than hardwood and since bamboo thrives in a damp environment, the product is also water resistant.

And the room 3 hours later —  I’m so glad that Jack took the above two pictures so I could share the finished room before all of the boxes and furniture were brought in.

Catie and Devin love animals.  So, we also have a few additional pets living at our house.    I’ve forbidden her to add to the mix while they’re here.  They can visit the local animal shelter but NO TOTING the pets home!

Zara, my ‘grand sugar flyer’.  She doesn’t appear in the open often.  Not my favorite.  She loves blueberries and mangoes to eat.

Opie, my ‘grandbunny’.  Opie is a Velveteen rabbit and is very, very soft.  I like him — might be because he is quiet.   He loves spinach, carrots, bananas, apples, and blueberries.

Bella, my ‘grandcat’.  She is a Maine Coon mix.  This breed gets quite large and she is still growing.  Currently, she weighs 12 pounds, likes to perch, play in water, and chirps like a bird instead of meows.

Catie and Devin have fish too.  Thank goodness, she doesn’t like birds or reptiles!

This week has been filled with unpacking and letting our bodies recover from the move and the work on the room.  The bathroom still needs work and the railing at the stairs needs to be finished but for now, Catie and Devin have a space to call their own.
Blessings,

Mimi

The Unexpected Remodel: Part 2

Hey!

In my last post, I shared about our renovation of the upstairs bonus room for my daughter and her husband.  Today, the bathroom is the topic of conversation.

The half bath had a dark brown linoleum floor that was peeling up and a 1970s vanity complete with cultured marble sink when we purchased the house.   Serviceable, but nothing special.

This bathroom, though, needs a much larger countertop and storage capacity for my daughter and son-in-law.  Bye- bye vanity.  Bye-bye peel and stick tile. Thank you, son-in-law!

The stairwell, when we bought the house, fortunately, did not have orange shag carpet like the upstairs room.  However, it did have this mottled brown shag that was well worn and looked like a mangy dog’s coat.  Nasty, too.  We ripped it up a long time ago and painted the stairs black.

Progress is moving forward.  The ceiling fan is in and the closet is being framed up this week by my sweet husband.  The kids will be here this weekend to paint.  Only 3 more weeks to go before it must be move in ready!

Blessings,

Mimi

An Unexpected Remodel

Hey!

We didn’t invest much into the room because we knew someday we would renovate.  Someday is here.  Over the weekend, we began an unexpected remodel of our upstairs bonus room over the garage. Plans for my daughter and her husband to move into their apartment didn’t work out as expected so they’re going to live with us for a little while.

Chosen for a number of reasons, the room has a half bath attached, is removed from the rest of the house and is about 400 square feet of space.  The bonus room looked like this when we bought our home 17 years ago.  I think the original homeowners used it as a party room.

Groovy, isn’t it?  I think the orange shag carpet is really something.  The corner rock fireplace was loads of fun for my husband to remove.

And here’s the matching bar …

The contractor made sure when he built the home to center the doorway to the half bath at the peak of the room so that the toilet serves as a glorious focal point.

We { my husband} removed the bar, fireplace, carpet, and the beams coming down the slanted wall years ago.  The room has served multiple purposes as an office, a craft room, a den, and a storage facility.

During high school, my daughter used this room as her own.  She wanted an explosion of color.  We painted the walls turquoise, painted the sub floor pink, and added a canopy with lime green fabric. The room didn’t have a closet so we created one with curtains.

After my daughter went to college and moved to her apartment, my husband used the room for his office, music room, and extra storage.  The colorful room really suited his tastes … bless his heart.

We have a month of weekends to renovate this room and the adjoining bathroom which I’ll be sharing later.   This room needs to go from whoa to wow with a modest budget.

I love Before and Afters.  How about you?  Stay tuned.

Blessings,

Mimi

Christmas Extras

Hey!

I thought I’d share some additional Christmas decorations in the house.  I shared my tree earlier this week. You can check it out here.

We’re in the middle of a renovation in our living room so I didn’t decorate much this year but it’s still festive.  If you remember, we tore out our old fireplace wall and we’re relocating the fireplace.  The living room isn’t the only room we’ve been working on.  I’ll be sharing more about that in the new year.

A mix of fresh cedar, pine, magnolia, and cleyera for the front door.

My daughter-in-law put a festive touch in my kitchen hutch for me.

I went simple but big on this wall in our living room.   I took 3 large frames and 3 grapevine wreaths that I bought at thrift stores, spray painted them, added bows and a touch of pink jingle bells.  Everyone has pink jingle bells, right?

I put a big bow on my old sash window mirror in my foyer.

Just a few more days left…are you ready? decorated? shopped out?

Mimi
