Friday Fun #6

The temperature outside is frigid.  I would love to sit all bundled up under a blanket reading but today is a writing day.  I’m making progress on my bible study but the tempo is slow.

  • Beautiful images of our world found here on Distractify.   I couldn’t pick a favorite.  They’re all so stunning.
  • Do you dream of traveling the world to see those beautiful sites in the above link?  How much fun would it be to go around the world meeting and filming a new person each day?  This pair of filmmakers are doing just that. Check it out here.
  • Bored with your job?  Would you like to work for a doggie daycare and be the puppy lifeguard on duty?  Puppy Pool Party here.

A Fairy in the Sunshine

The other morning, Delta and I were out on her daily walkabout when a beautiful yellow leaf  shining in the sun caught my eye.  Suspended by a spider’s single thread, the leaf hung perfectly still and I was so captivated by its glorious color I wanted to take a picture.  You should’ve seen me trying to contain all 34 pounds of puppy pulling on the leash and trying to take a steady shot with my phone in the other hand.

fairy shotWhen I downloaded the image, I received a surprise.  Oh sure, the leaf might be overexposed but I do believe I see a fairy sitting atop that bright yellow leaf.  What do you think?  Do you see a fairy?

“And as the seasons come and go, here’s something you might like to know. There are fairies everywhere: under bushes, in the air, playing games just like you play, singing through their busy day. So listen, touch, and look around — in the air and on the ground. And if you watch all nature’s things, you might just see a fairy’s wing.” ~Author Unknown

Becoming Conference 2014

becoming conf 8Hey!

I had a wonderful time with my cousin, Elizabeth, at the 4th Annual Becoming Conference 2014.   I hadn’t seen her in quite some time and I don’t think we stopped talking much the whole weekend.

The conference took place at the Ridgecrest Conference Center nestled in the mountains of North Carolina near Asheville.  The setting was beautiful but the weather was not.  We had mist and rain.  It didn’t dampen our spirits though, only our hair.

The conference ran from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening.  550 women from all over the country came to participate and ranged in age from teens to seniors.

The staff did everything in their power to put smiles on our faces and provide fun for the entire weekend.  At registration, we were offered ice cream bars as we waited in line to sign in and then, we were handed a wonderful bag of goodies.  We, also, enjoyed a Girls Night In watching “Mom’s Night Out“, taking pics in the photo booth, shopping the Cents of Style booth, and other fun activities.  Thanks y’all!

We had fun meeting other people and I really enjoyed meeting, hearing, and seeing some of my favorite bloggers in person.

After we were settled into our rooms, we were welcomed to the weekend by Jen and Jenny, the event planners of the weekend. The keynote speaker was Kelly Swanson, who had us laughing about things only girls would understand.

The stage was cleverly decorated.  I thought the banners and this burlap board would be great DIY projects.

Hatching a Dream

Several weeks ago, a Carolina wren and I struggled over territorial rights to a hanging basket near my back door.  Not the safest of locations for her to consider as a nesting site since the area is heavily trafficked and our cat loves to perch in the windowsill nearby but that mama bird was determined and even possibly, desperate.

She busied herself daily making a nest.  She kept coming back day after day, oftentimes twice in a day, to build doggedly and establish a ‘home’ for her babies.  Her urge to nest must’ve weighed upon her heavily.

Then, one morning, I awoke and found she had laid a single egg and a day later, another joined the first.

The wren had a purpose, a desire that couldn’t be suppressed.  Ideas are like that sometimes.  A dream, a wish comes into our hearts longing to be hatched into fruition.  We begin to lay the support twigs and the padding as we build that dream into a reality.  Occasionally, we encounter difficulties along the way but with perseverance, courage and commitment that whim of fancy turns into a reality.

At times, we want to skip over some of the slower steps like incubating the dream.  We long for action.  But a dream, a wish, a hope takes time to grow, mold, and gel into a tangible entity that can be shared.  Once birthed into existence, that hope, that wish, that figment longs to be filled with the food of dedication, perseverance, enthusiasm and passion.

The real fun begins as we grow and learn new skills and we hunger for more.  We chirp out for everyone to join our team.  We long to have our voices heard and those that have their ears attuned to our particular frequency will hear our chirps, our songs, and like the mama bird will come and join us in the nest.

We perch on the edge of our nest, looking outward towards the fulfillment of all that we have dreamt and then… the dream takes flight.

Have you nested and hatched a dream recently ? Sing it loud and sing it proud!  Be heard.

Leaves Of Three Or Is It Five?

Today’s post idea comes as a response to help my friends who are in danger of unwittingly becoming the victims of a horrific case of poison ivy.

I’ve been the sufferer more times than I can count of a case of poison ivy.  The itching, oozing, crusty puffiness is miserable.  All the ointments in the world only alleviate the symptoms.  They don’t really get rid of it.  The dreaded affliction must run its course.

The worst case I had was when I went to summer camp. One night, our camp counselors wanted to give us the quintessential camp experience so they built a big bonfire for us to roast marshmallows and sing camp songs. Unfortunately for me, the tree limbs they burned had poison ivy on them which I inhaled in the smoke.  I developed a systemic reaction and became covered inside and outside of my body with poison ivy.  Misery — Pure Misery.  I had allergy shots after that experience and avoided the plant like the plague.

The best way though not to get a case of poison ivy is to recognize it and avoid it.  Poison ivy has three leaves.  A very common saying is Leaves of three, let it be” and “has been cited in print since 1907” according to this site I found.   The leaves can be very small when they first unfurl in the spring but can become quite large like the one below which is about the size of a salad plate.

poison ivy 2Virginia creeper is often confused with poison ivy but virginia creeper is not poisonous.  Although, the berries that form on virginia creeper are toxic.  Virginia creeper has five leaves and like poison ivy, the plant sends out runners and climbs trees, fences, and structures.

Busy Times and Yard Visitors

This week has been C-R-A-Z-Y!  I’ll be back next week with more details and life happenings.  In the meantime, I had a few visitors in my yard this week.
