Messes and Mishaps

Hey!

Renovating makes a mess everywhere. Its not only about the drywall dust, the sawdust, the nails dropped everywhere, or the paint splatters on parts that shouldn’t get them or even, the dust being tracked down the stairs and into the rest of the house. Most of that can be vac’d up. The bulk of the chaos is all over the house in the form of boxes, bags and stacks from one end of the house to the other because the contents of this 400 square foot room had to be removed and go somewhere else. Constant rearranging is required to get the one item you need behind the huge stack in front. Here’s a view of our garage. I parked my car in here a month ago.

Our daughter keeps bringing boxes home as she unloads her apartment to move in with us. Boxes are everywhere. My patience… well… its hanging in there too. I see the end in sight. This time the renovation won’t be calculated in years or months. This time is different. We will be done in weeks and we only have a week and a half left on our deadline schedule. If you missed out on the beginnings of this renovation and you’re curious about it, click here.

The room is taking shape. Most of the plywood underlayment has gone down and hopefully, the rest will go down this week and the flooring can be installed.

I’ve learned over the years through our various renovations to always be prepared for it to cost more and take longer than expected. Mishaps happen.

Case in point: My husband dropped the edge of a sheet of plywood on his baby toe. Doctor said he has multiple fractures in the tip of his toe. Ouch! He wouldn’t let me take a picture to show. He said he has man toes.

Then, as he was nailing the subfloor tighter, he accidentally shot a nail through the wiring. The power went out downstairs to our living room. We had to call the electrician to come and fix it. Between the electrician and my husband, they managed to drill five holes into the subfloor. I’m sure a joke is in there somewhere about how many it takes. While the electrician was working, he, also, accidentally cut a wire. I didn’t have to pay for that one.

When the wire had a nail shot through it, the spark was so hot it left scorch marks. Fortunately, we knew quickly that the power was out so the problem was noticed immediately. If it had been a less used area, we might not have discovered the issue and moved ahead with the flooring and had a potential fire waiting to happen.

On a general note, we have an excellent site manager. She is dutiful to cautiously and carefully inspect the room and its progress every day. She is a hard task master.

I’m hoping after this weekend, I can dazzle you with flooring and a functioning bathroom. I sure hope the toilet doesn’t get a crack in it.

Blessings,

Mimi

Tending the Garden,Tending the Soul

Hey!

I’ve done a little garden tending this week. The birds were chirping, the wind whispered in the trees as I pulled up weeds, raked, and moved dirt around with my hands. I like this task of caring and tending to the garden. My mind wanders and begins to soul tend, too.

fleabaneI found weeds blossoming. Pretty, but a nuisance. I work diligently to keep them away. Sometimes, poison is required.

I have weeds deep in my soul. I fool myself into thinking they’re pretty. As I yanked and pulled those weeds in my garden, the roots held firm into the ground while they broke easily at the base of the stem. I know that I need a spade to get the remainders out. Like those in my soul, I know they’re going to require some muscle to remove and if I don’t take care of them, they’ll once again produce and choke out the good I want.

With a little effort and nurturing, the blossoming begins.

clematis 2I removed debris and the suffocating weeds so the plant had the space to freely thrive and bloom. I tilled at things buried deep inside as I puttered about the yard while persuading attributes of joy, hope, kindness and love to sow in their space within me to bloom like my garden: fresh, clean, and well-tended.

clematisHow does your garden grow?

Blessings,

Mimi

Progress on the Bonus Room Renovation

Hey!

Progress. Oh, how I love progress in a renovation! We had managed a sizable dent into the project at the end of last weekend. The framing for the closet was beginning, the nail holes in the wall were puttied, and the bamboo flooring was acclimatizing as the work ended. Some of the wall also got painted to see if the color was the right choice.

During the week, my husband roughed in the closet and started preparing it for paint.

A week ago, my son-in-law ripped out the flooring in the bathroom. We discovered that the underlayment needed to be taken out because the previous owners had used the wrong kind. They had used particle board. Poor Devin, he was back at ripping flooring out this weekend too. We have to put down plywood as an underlayment for the new floor. They had also installed the particle board under the sheetrock. Messy job.

Guest Post: Cara Meredith

Hey!

Earlier this week, I guest posted for Cara and today, we’re doing a little blog bunny hopping and she is posting for me. I’m so impressed by all that she has accomplished in her life. I think you will be too when you read her bio, but more so, after you read her lovely, poignant message for Good Friday. Cara regularly posts at be, mama. be. Blessings, Mimi

Leaning Into Friday

I used to have a love-hate relationship with the weeks leading up to Easter. As a child, we didn’t participate in Lent; I’d see various friends arriving at school with a leftover smudge on their foreheads, and I’d wonder why they’d forgotten to wash their face this Thursday morning.

I’d say mmm-hmm when a Catholic buddy of mine lamented at having to give up ice cream or chocolate, meat or – true story – quesadillas in the forty days prior to Christ’s resurrection.

But for me, in the little Baptist church we found ourselves entrenched in, the Easter season seemed to arrive without fanfare. As children, we found ourselves seemingly shoved with palm branches on Sunday morning, made to make our way down the long aisle, waving and fanning and smiling our fronds to the adults sitting in the pews to the left and right. And then, just as it always seemed to do, the dreariness of the week ahead began to set in. I knew I’d have to hear the brutal story of One Man’s death on the cross, the nails driven into his hands, the way he cried out, without answer, to his dad.

It made me yearn for the arrival of Sunday morning.

I wanted to stop living in Friday. I wanted the hurt and pain and loneliness of that dreaded waiting period to return to triumphant hymns, to again hear the shouts of He has risen – He has risen indeed! I wanted the afternoon feast of ham and mashed potatoes and lemon meringue pie, just as I wanted the pretty new dress from J.C. Penney. I didn’t want to sit in the ugliness – I begged Beauty to return.

But now I kind of like it.

I love Jerusalem Jackson Greer’s words in A Homemade Year: The Blessings of Cooking, Crafting and Coming Together,as she chronicles the Easter season, and Holy Saturday in particular: “…I do my best to live in that place, that wax-crayon place of trust and waiting. Of accepting what I cannot know. Of mourning what needs to be mourned. Of accepting what needs to be accepted. Of hoping for what seems impossible.” Because when I actually sit in the waiting, in the mourning, in the accepting and in the hoping, then it makes Sunday morning all the more resurrected.

I then feel the joy that much more. I lean into the hope and I embrace the celebration and I believe in his peace, all over again, as if for the first time. So this week, as you prepare for Sunday, might you also sit in the waiting pain of Friday.

I’m Posting at Cara’s Blog Today

Hey!

Cara and I became acquainted through our mutual blog friend, Katie. Remember the Giveaway this fall? She was a part of that fun. Cara writes a lovely blog about life and faith and family at be.mama.be. I love her tagline, “Finding beauty in the most unlikely of places.”

Today, I’m guest posting for her. I hope you’ll drop by and get acquainted with Cara and her blog and of course, read about the simple wisdom I discovered for raising my children.

Here’s just a little taste of the post:

I was floundering as a parent when my children started approaching elementary age. I did fine in the basic areas of love, comfort, feeding, clothing, and etc. but the older my children became, the less confident I felt of providing proper direction and guidance for them. I felt ill-equipped to navigate them through the preteen and teen years still ahead. The world, I felt, had become much more complicated and harsh than the reality that I had grown up in.

Then one day,…

The Unexpected Remodel: Part 2

Hey!

In my last post, I shared about our renovation of the upstairs bonus room for my daughter and her husband. Today, the bathroom is the topic of conversation.

The half bath had a dark brown linoleum floor that was peeling up and a 1970s vanity complete with cultured marble sink when we purchased the house. Serviceable, but nothing special.

upstairs bath 4After we moved in, I painted the walls black and wallpapered with National Geographic covers and this room quickly became the room my family loved the most and couldn’t wait to show their friends… wonders will never cease…

This bathroom, though, needs a much larger countertop and storage capacity for my daughter and son-in-law. Bye- bye vanity. Bye-bye peel and stick tile. Thank you, son-in-law!

The stairwell, when we bought the house, fortunately, did not have orange shag carpet like the upstairs room. However, it did have this mottled brown shag that was well worn and looked like a mangy dog’s coat. Nasty, too. We ripped it up a long time ago and painted the stairs black.

Progress is moving forward. The ceiling fan is in and the closet is being framed up this week by my sweet husband. The kids will be here this weekend to paint. Only 3 more weeks to go before it must be move in ready!

Blessings,

Mimi
