Wisdom From The Animals: Day 31

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 31

Today is the last day in the #write31days writing challenge. I hope you’ve enjoyed this series. All month long, I’ve shared animal facts and biblical lessons that can be learned from each of these animals. The bird, above, is a hornbill and I thought this bird was perfect for Halloween. If you’d like to read the posts from the beginning, you can find them here.

“reject every kind of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22

Throughout scripture, God instructs us to turn from evil. He commands that we leave evil attitudes, behaviors, and actions behind us and embrace those that honor and praise Him. We are to embrace and incorporate attitudes, behaviors, and actions of righteousness. While celebrating this spooky holiday and enjoying all the fun of dressing up and eating copious amounts of candy, remember that God loves you.

Happy Halloween!

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 30

luna moth

Wisdom From The Animals:Day 30

Luna moths like my yard. I find them often resting against the side of the house. Recently, I learned that luna moths particularly like sweetgum trees which explains why I have so many of them because my yard is canopied by sweetgums.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

I love books. I don’t dare count how many I own or my family might call me a hoarder. Insects are detrimental to books. They love the paper and glue. But, the treasures that are most important are those things I store in heaven. Acts, behaviors, and attitudes that have honored God or given Him praise and glory. These things can never been ruined since they are my spiritual acts of worship and given to God. My heart’s treasure is not found here on earth but in heaven with Him.

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 29

koi

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 29

Koi were developed in Japan in the 1820s and are a variety of carp. In Japan, they are viewed as symbols of love and friendship. Koi come in many colors and can live well over one hundred years if the environment is favorable.

“‘Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!'” Luke 11:11-13

Jesus was teaching His disciples about prayer and told them a parable about a man who helped his friend only after his friend’s continued persistence. In the verse above, Jesus wanted them to see how loving the Father is in comparison. Our Father hears our prayers and answers them. Sometimes, those answers are not the ones that I want but God in His wisdom knows what is in my best interest. Other times, God answers my prayers in ways that I would never have imagined. I only need to come before Him praying in sincerity of heart and motive.

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 28

audrey 5

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 28

Audrey lived with us for fifteen years. She was an excellent hunter and quite proud of all of her kills. She liked to share them with us and would often leave them for us to discover on the mat at our back door.

“Of the animals that move about on the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon.” Leviticus 11:29,30

Chapter 11 of Leviticus is an instruction on which foods were considered clean or unclean. Food was divided into these two categories perhaps for physical reasons to keep the people from becoming sick and/or for spiritual reasons to keep them from becoming spiritually unclean before God. Unclean foods were those that were unfit for eating. Also, if any of these animals crawled onto, fell onto or into, or died near the clean foods then all had to be thrown out and in some cases, the vessel as well.

I need to be mindful of the food that I put in my body. In order to serve God fully, my body needs to be properly rested and fed to perform to the best of its ability. I know when I eat too many sweets or too much junk food, I feel sluggish and out of sorts. I want to be able to give God my all and eating healthy is one of the ways I can serve Him better. And I agree with God on the above instruction, anything in the rodent/ lizard family needs to go!

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 27

polar bear

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 27

A polar bear’s fur is made of clear, hollow tubes filled with air. They clean their fur by rolling in the snow. Sometimes scarring or residue on the fur causes the bear to appear as cream colored, yellow, or even pink in the Arctic light to the human eye. Polar bears also don’t hibernate. Only a female bear will bed down when she is with her little ones.

“Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.” Proverbs 28:15

I become like a mama bear when I feel the need to defend my family or my friends. I allow my passions sometimes to get the better of me. Those on the receiving end of my behavior don’t deserve the treatment that I give them. In this passage from Proverbs, the word wicked in the original language means guilty of a crime, guilty of sin against God, or guilty of hostility towards God. My behavior, raging like a bear unchecked and not in submission to God, defines how I treat others. I don’t want to be viewed as someone that others need to fear because of my mama bear tendencies. Only by walking in the Spirit and submitting my will to God can I soothe the beast within.

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 26

kangaroo

Wisdom From The Animals: Day 26

The family name of kangaroos, wallabies, and their relatives is Macropodidae which means big feet. Over fifty species exist in this marsupial family. Their powerful back feet help them fend off predators, jump high, and bound at high speed. Their tail aids in balance and support.

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!'” Isaiah 52:7

When I have good news, I can’t wait to share it. I want to tell everybody I know. Good news following difficulties is particularly sweet to share. Sometimes the news I want to share is of the kind that makes me want to leap and jump for joy. The good news of Jesus is the type of news that needs sharing. I sometimes find sharing His message of peace, salvation, and eternal life uncomfortable and scary but the message is worth my discomfort. Jesus is news worth leaping, jumping and shouting for joy.
