The Recess

Dear highly esteemed and most valued Reader,

Due to an unplanned and highly chaotic state of being, I have been unable to post my weekly musings of mundane suburbanite domesticity. I had fully intended to post said writings but the days came and I found myself unwittingly the victim of a severe case of new-puppy-love-itis and of the equally centrifugal force of summer sunshine pulling me into the vortex of languid days filled with relaxed schedules, no deadlines, and a beckoning bedside book stack enticing me to stop and gorge upon the written word. I have attempted feebly to withstand these coaxing charms but alas to no avail I have failed. So, dear reader, please do not depart for I will return on occasion during these dog days of summer to tantalize you with my view of life as I know it from the humid, sultry south.

Blessings,

Mimi

Fear Spelled Backwards

Hey!

Fear is such an interesting word. Only 4 letters, but whose meaning, when combined with an object, carries a power that is daunting and overwhelming and even stifling at times. Fear, in my life, seems to come in a variety of shades and hues. This week, a question for reflection and writing was posted in my {in}courage writing group. We were simply asked;

“What fear keeps you standing still or running in the other direction and how can you learn to dance with it?”

I thought of the irrational fears that I have. The kind that come from reading a scary book late into the night while my husband is away, when I turn out the lights, noises and creaks transform into a stranger creeping around inside my house. Or the anxiety that came while taking a math quiz in school or even, my mild anxiety over having to make small talk.

I also considered my rational fears. The ones I have about avoiding poisonous animals or aggressive dogs. Or my maternal instinct that worries for my children, their future, their accomplishments, and successes. Other rational fears are those that I’ve experienced regarding my future security when I look at my bank account and wonder how we will ever pay for something that’s necessary or when I have a particularly bad doctor visit and I wonder what the future might hold for me medically speaking. The ones associated with my writing fall into this category and are the type that halt my finger from pressing down on the publish button. These worries while based on rational truths can impede my joy of life if I allow them to overtake my thoughts.

The fears that are less concrete and more internal. The ones that I’m intimately acquainted with that reside in pain. The fear of loss. This fear, I think, encompasses all because the object that I’m fearful of could be emotional, spiritual, mental, or physical. The fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of physical pain or death, a fear that is real or imagined. At times, fear, itself, is what I fear. These fears slither in when I’m tired, depressed, lonely, vulnerable, and convince me in these moments of lies and false truths.

The answer to fear I think is looking at it from a different perspective and not giving it a foothold. As I thought about the word, I rearranged the letters. By writing the word backwards, I discovered an interesting insight when I looked up the word, raef. The Urban Dictionary defines

raef” = the art of being able to excel in almost everything simply by being yourself. Note that it spells “fear” backwards. “

A second definition for this word is “an intelligent, hot Italian guy” which might make my husband fearful.

I need to recognize my fear, spell it backwards by driving it out and embracing it. This step is possible by the encouragement of loved ones. Those who help me dance through, around, and on top of the fears that have me frozen. I also find great strength in repeating scripture. Like a mantra, I pound the verse or phrase into my being until the grace and assurance of God washes down deep into the marrow of my bones and very existence overcoming my strong will. When I place all of my irrational, rational and internal fears into the hands of God and let go, I can accomplish all that He has planned simply by being who He has called me to be.

Blessings,

Mimi

Her First Loaf of Bread

Hey!

My daughter, Catie, has conquered the academic world but we’re still working on conquering homemaking.

Her first foray into the world of cooking was to attempt a loaf of quick bread. I might have suggested something a little easier but she picked out a basic recipe and wanted to try it. We renamed and claimed it because she altered the recipe by adding the butter, rosemary, and cheese. She’s an ambitious one.

When her loaf came out of the oven, she was so proud and I was proud for her. And I must say, the loaf was very moist and delicious. I think you’ll enjoy it, particularly with vegetables fresh from the garden.

1-1/2 cups of all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup of milk
1/4 cup of melted butter
2 Tablespoons of fresh rosemary ( save some for garnish on top)
1/2 to 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese ( save some for garnish on top)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a medium loaf pan. Stir together all dry ingredients {flour, powder, salt, rosemary, and cheese} in a bowl. Whisk together milk, butter, and eggs in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. After fully combined together, pour into the pan, and add the reserve rosemary and cheese on top. Baking time: 30 minutes.

What have you baked lately? Any recipes you’re willing to share?

Blessings,

Mimi

Meet Delta: Our Newest Addition To The Zoo

Hey!

We flew to Denver over the weekend to attend my niece’s wedding. The real story, however, happened two days before we left for Colorado.

Catie and I made a brief stop into our local animal shelter for fun. You know, just to pet and cuddle a few puppies and kittens. I didn’t plan to bring one home. I wasn’t sure I wanted another dog after the heartbreak and grief of having to let go of the best dog in the world.

The timing was wrong. We were headed out of town and our house is already a pet zoo with fish, 3 cats, a sugar flyer, and a bunny, not to mention, the four humans who co-habitate with them. But, there she was. Her sweet little face looking at me and hoping to be adopted. She licked our fingers and was so sweet and gentle. Delta wasn’t barking her head off like the other puppies. We know now she was false advertising herself but we’re going to keep her anyway.

We took the day to think about it and talk ourselves out of it. We didn’t do a very good job of it. Late in the day, we went back to get her knowing that if she was still there, she was meant to be ours. We think she is a Retriever mix or maybe a Labradoodle.

We’ve had little sleep and Delta is not quite housebroken but everyone, human and animal alike, is adjusting to the latest member. She is a good-natured, sweet-tempered puppy who will probably grow to be a small horse and hopefully, will learn soon not to bark all night long.
