According to science, the perfect face is composed of certain measurements and angles between all of the face’s features. This young woman from England is said to have the perfect face. She is lovely but I don’t agree that beauty is found in a formula. I think beauty comes in many different arrangements and colors.
I’ve never thought of myself as having a beautiful complexion, particularly as an adult. I didn’t suffer from acne terribly as a teen but after my children were born and my hormones raged for a time, I had cystic acne which hurt and looked awful. Four years ago, I made some significant changes in how I take care of my skin and ever since then, I have received numerous compliments on my complexion. Want to know my secrets?
1. Get plenty of rest, exercise, healthy food, and reduce stress. You”ve heard these suggestions a bazillion times but they do work.
2. Drink plenty of water. I drink between a half gallon-gallon a day.
3. Keep your hands off of your face. I have the most trouble with this one. I like to rest my chin on my hand when I’m writing or reading. Bad idea. I realized that many of my breakouts were caused by this habit.
4. Know the foods that cause you to break out. I, finally, learned at 48 years old that potato chips will cause my face to break out if I eat too many. Upon this discovery, I realized really spicy chips will cause breakouts around my mouth. Too much sugar in my diet will sometimes cause breakouts as well. Also, if you suffer from tummy issues, the acid in your belly might be causing the breakouts on your face.
5. Evaluate your skin type often. I was treating my skin as an adult like I treated it as a teen. My skin had changed over the years. I was no longer normal/oily but sensitive and oily. I, also, discovered that my sensitive skin must be the priority over tending to the oiliness. If you have trouble figuring out your type, any makeup counter person or aesthetician can help.
6. Buy and use the right products for your skin. I use Cetaphil to clean my face morning and night. I use an eye makeup remover lotion by Neutrogena. I wear a moisturizer tint for foundation that contains salicylic acid and sunscreen during the day called Pixi Illuminating Tint & Conceal that I buy at Target and at night, I use Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Cream. I, recently, started using a Retin A product a few nights a week along with my night moisturizer. I use a generic brand but Roc has a great product. The other new product I started using which has helped with redness and the occasional breakout is honey. I remove all my makeup and get my face really clean and then I rub honey gently into my skin in a circular motion and leave it on for a few seconds up to about a minute and then, just rinse off and put on moisturizer. You’ll be amazed how soft and smooth your face feels after you use it. It is sticky, icky to use but the smell is yummy!
7. Clean your face before bedtime and try to go makeup free at least a few days a week. Your mom was right — let your skin breathe! Your skin repairs itself when you sleep. That’s why you need to get the makeup off and to keep your pillowcases from looking disastrous.
8. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses and possibly a hat. Best way to keep wrinkles and skin cancer at a minimum or not at all.
9. Use your ring finger when applying anything around your eyes. The ring finger is not as strong as your other fingers and therefore, doesn’t pull and tug too hard when putting on, smudging, or taking off eye makeup.
10. Smile. You’re never fully dressed without it!
